“The northeast” covers eight states with real differences in climate, but a few patterns hold across most of the region.

## October to early December

The clearest, most reliable window. The monsoon has drained away, rivers are still full, the hills are green, and the air is usually clear enough for mountain views. Festivals cluster in this period too.

## Late December to February

Cold in the hills, pleasant in the Assam valley, and quiet. Some high roads in Arunachal and Sikkim close with snow. Good for wildlife in the lowland parks as vegetation dies back.

## March to April

Warming up, hazier, but a good second choice — flowers in the hills and shoulder-season prices before the rains.

## May to September

- The wettest months on earth in parts of Meghalaya.
- Landslides and flight delays are common; itineraries need slack.
- Also the most dramatic time to see the region green and full, if you accept the disruption.

> If you can only go once, aim for November. If you are flexible, the last week of September can give you monsoon greenery with fewer washouts.

Whatever the month, build in a spare day per week. Weather here rearranges plans more often than anywhere else in the country.
