Jaipur is usually the first or last stop on a Rajasthan trip, and it can absorb two full days without feeling stretched. The old city is a planned grid inside a wall, which makes it easier to navigate than it first looks.

## The walled city

Start at the City Palace and the observatory next to it, then walk the bazaars — each street traditionally sells one kind of thing. The famous five-storey facade is best in early light and takes ten minutes to appreciate; the streets around it deserve longer.

## Up on the ridge

Amber Fort is the set piece: go at opening time. On the way back, stop at the smaller Jaigarh and Nahargarh forts for the view over the city and, at Nahargarh, for sunset.

- Buy the composite ticket if you plan to see several monuments.
- Auto-rickshaw drivers will offer “full day” rates — agree the exact stops first.
- The stepwell at Panna Meena ka Kund near Amber is a quick, worthwhile detour.

## Eating

Jaipur takes its snacks seriously — kachori, ghevar, lassi served in clay cups. A morning food walk through the old city is a good way to cover ground and eat well at the same time.

> Two nights is the sensible minimum. A third lets you day-trip to Bagru or Sanganer for block printing without cutting the city short.

First-time Jaipur is busy and can be tiring. Balance one fort-heavy morning with one slow afternoon and it stays enjoyable.
