# A First-Timer's Guide to Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi is the historic tip of a much larger city, joined to Ernakulam by bridges and a cheap passenger ferry. It is small enough to cross on foot in half an hour and layered enough to keep you busy for two or three days.

## Getting your bearings

The waterfront path runs past the old fishing nets and a line of stalls. Behind it sits a grid of quiet streets with Dutch, Portuguese and British-era buildings, many now guesthouses and cafés. Mattancherry, a short auto-rickshaw ride south, holds the spice warehouses, the synagogue lane and the palace.

## What is worth your time

- An early walk along the water before the day-trip buses arrive.
- The spice market streets of Mattancherry, best in the morning.
- A Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance in the evening — arrive early to watch the performers apply their make-up.

Distances are short, so there is no need to over-plan. Most people find their own favourite corner within a day.

## How it fits a wider trip

Fort Kochi works well as an arrival point. From here it is a few hours to the backwaters around Alappuzha, half a day up to the tea hills of Munnar, and a longer haul north to the beaches or south towards Thiruvananthapuram.

> Two nights is enough to see Fort Kochi without rushing. Three lets you slow down and treat it as a place to rest rather than a checklist.

The peninsula can feel touristy in the few blocks nearest the nets, and then surprisingly ordinary a street or two back. Both versions are the real place.
