The Most Beautiful Road Trips in Himachal Pradesh
Four drives that are the point of the trip in themselves, with notes on timing, road condition and where to break the journey.
Himachal is a driving state. The distances look short and take twice as long as you expect, which is fine when the road is the reason you came.
Shimla to the Sangla valley
Following the Sutlej upstream, the road climbs from apple country into the drier Kinnaur landscape. Break at Sarahan or Kalpa. Allow a full day; the last stretch into Sangla is slow.
The Spiti loop
The classic circuit runs Shimla–Kinnaur–Kaza–Kunzum La–Manali. It needs about a week, a spare day for weather, and a vehicle with clearance. Going in this direction acclimatises you gradually.
Manali to Jibhi and Tirthan
A gentler option: quiet the other way, into the Banjar valley, with wooden villages, trout streams and short forest walks. Good for two or three nights and manageable in any car in the dry months.
- Fuel is scarce beyond Kaza and Reckong Peo — fill up early.
- Landslide season is the monsoon; check road status before committing.
- Carry cash; card acceptance thins out fast.
The Kangra valley, with Dharamshala, Palampur and the narrow-gauge railway, is the low-altitude alternative when the high passes are shut.
Pick one route and drive it slowly. Trying to link two of these in a single trip turns a holiday into a transfer.
