Six Quiet Beach Towns for a Slower Holiday
Not resorts — working coastal towns with enough of a guest scene to be comfortable and not so much that they have lost the plot.
The Indian coastline is long, and most of it is not built up. These are six towns that have a few good places to stay and eat, and otherwise get on with fishing and farming.
The Konkan
South of Mumbai, places like Velas, Tamhini's coast, and the beaches around Malvan and Tarkarli have clear water in season, homestays run by fishing families, and turtle nesting in spring. Public transport is slow; a scooter helps.
Southern Goa and the Karnataka coast
Agonda and Patnem in Goa's far south stay low-rise. Just over the border, Gokarna's outlying beaches — reached on foot or by boat — are quiet outside the winter peak.

- The fishing beaches near Kanyakumari, more about the light than swimming.
- Small Kerala coast villages where a homestay is the only accommodation.
Quiet is seasonal. A town that feels remote in October can be busy in late December. Travelling in the shoulder months buys you a lot of calm.
