# Udaipur Beyond the Palaces

Udaipur is built around a chain of artificial lakes, and the famous buildings sit right on the water. That view earns its reputation. But the old city climbs a low hill behind it, and that is where a longer stay pays off.

## Walk the eastern lanes

Away from the ghats, the lanes near Chandpole and the Brahmpol gate are full of workshops — miniature painters, marble carvers, tailors — that still supply the tourist trade but work at their own pace. Mornings are quiet and shopkeepers have time to talk.

## Climb something

The hilltop of the monsoon palace catches the sunset and the wind. Closer in, the small temples above the old city give you the lake without the crowds on the ghats. None of these are long walks; the heat is the limiting factor, not the distance.

- Carry water and go early or late.
- Many rooftop restaurants have the same view — the food, not the panorama, is the differentiator.
- The evening boat on the main lake is busiest at sunset; a mid-afternoon ride is calmer.

## Day trips, chosen carefully

Eklingji and Nagda make a short northern loop. Kumbhalgarh and the Jain temples at Ranakpur are a full day each and better as an overnight if you have time.

Udaipur can feel like a stage set in its most photographed spots. Ten minutes uphill, it turns back into a city that happens to have a remarkable view.
