# A Weekend Guide to Hampi

Hampi was the centre of a large empire six centuries ago, and its temples, markets and waterworks are spread across several kilometres of extraordinary granite landscape. A weekend is tight but workable.

## Two banks, two moods

The south bank holds the main monuments and the village of Hampi Bazaar. The north bank, reached by a short coracle or a long road loop, is quieter, with guesthouses among paddy and palms. Many people stay north and cross for sightseeing.

## What to prioritise

- The Vitthala temple with its stone chariot, early before the heat.
- The sacred centre around the Virupaksha temple, still in daily use.
- The royal enclosure and the stepped tank, best in late light.
- A climb up Matanga or Hemakuta hill for the wider view.

## Getting there

Overnight trains and buses run from Bengaluru and Goa to Hospet, about half an hour away. Hire a bicycle or an auto for the ruins; the site is too spread out to do entirely on foot in a weekend.

> If you only have one full day, do Vitthala at opening, the sacred centre mid-morning, rest through midday, and the royal area at dusk.

Two nights turns a rushed checklist into a proper visit, with time to just sit among the boulders at the end of the day.
